PT vs. Classes: Which One Is Best for Beginners in Leith?

“I’m too unfit for a gym…”

That’s what Karen said the first time she walked through our doors. She’d just moved to Restalrig, was 42, and hadn’t done any proper exercise in years. “I’ll try one class,” she said. “But I might leave halfway.”

She didn’t leave. She’s still coming three times a week, two years later.

And no, she didn’t start with personal training. Or big group classes. She started with something in between. Small groups, friendly faces, and a coach who actually gave a damn.

So… PT or classes? What’s best when you’re just starting out? Let’s break it down.

Personal Training: One-on-One Attention

PT is like having someone hold your hand, without making it weird. You get full attention. The coach helps you with form, keeps you safe, and makes a plan that works for you.

If you’re nervous or want to build confidence before joining a group, this is gold. Especially if you’ve got injuries or need a slower pace.

At our studio in Leith (just off Leith Walk ), we do beginner PT sessions that don’t feel awkward or intense. It’s just you and a friendly coach figuring things out. No pressure. No mirrors.

Great for:

  • People with injuries or sore knees

  • Total beginners who don’t want to be watched

  • Folks who want faster results

Classes: Energy, Community, and Fun

Classes are more social. You move with a group, follow the coach, and maybe sweat a little. But here’s the thing: not all classes are the same.

Ours are small (like 6-10 people), and everyone’s friendly. There’s no “fittest person in the room” vibe. No showing off. Just normal people trying to get a bit fitter.

We’ve had people from Abbeyhill, Meadowbank, and Leith Walk turn up in PJs and smashed it.

Doesn’t matter what you wear or what shape you’re in—just showing up is the hard part.

Good classes for beginners:

  • Social Strength

  • Kettlebell Basics

  • Beginner Bootcamp (don’t worry, no shouting)

So… Which One’s Better?

Honestly? It depends on you.

If you want to ease in, get stronger, and have someone guide you step by step, start with personal training.

If you’re cool jumping into a group, want to meet people, and like variety, try a beginner-friendly class.

Or do both. Some of our members start with PT for a month, then switch to classes. Others stick with one forever. You don’t need to commit to anything fancy. Just try something. See how it feels.
